I was assassinated on Good Friday, April 14, 1965 while attending a performance at Ford's Theatre with my wife and two friends. I was assassinated by supporter of the confederacy, John Wilkes Booth. By killing me, they hoped to create chaos among the federal government, and therefore overthrow the Union. However, although they took my life, their plot to overtake the United State failed.
My emancipation proclamation is known to many as "the abolition of slavery." However, some criticized it at the time for only freeing only the slaves over which the Union had no power. Although most slaves were not freed immediately, the Proclamation brought freedom to thousands of slaves the day it went into effect. My Proclamation was effective in nine states.
Today I rallied Americans in my famous 'Gettysburg Address'. This speech continues to be one of the most quoted in United States history. My speech was delivered in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on the afternoon of November 19, 1863. My speech began with the iconic phrase "
four score and seven years ago..." Despite being one of the most remembered speeches in history, the exact wording of it has been disputed by historians.
